Kawkaba: Highlights from the Barjeel Art Foundation

This summer, art enthusiasts in London have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich and diverse world of Arab art. Christie’s, the renowned auction house, is hosting the largest-ever exhibition of Arab art in the British capital, running from July 20 to August 23. The exhibition, titled “Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World,” is a celebration of the creativity and history of Arab artists spanning eight decades, from 1939 to 2023.

Kawkaba: Highlighting the Barjeel Art Foundation

One of the exhibition’s two sections, “Kawkaba,” is a stunning display of 100 modern artworks from the UAE’s Barjeel Art Foundation. Founded by Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi in 2010, the Barjeel Art Foundation showcases works from across the Arab world, paying homage to the region’s artistic diversity and resonance. The exhibition features a carefully curated selection of artistic mediums, reflecting the myriad of artistic voices from the Middle East and North Africa.

Notably, “Kawkaba” is a gender-balanced exhibition, reflecting the commitment of Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi to promote equality in the arts. Through this showcase, visitors will explore the vibrant tapestry of modern Arab art, shedding light on both celebrated and underrepresented artists from the region.

Emirati Art Reimagined: Honoring Hassan Sharif and Contemporary Voices

The second section, “Emirati Art Reimagined,” spotlights the late Emirati artist Hassan Sharif, who was a prominent figure in the region’s contemporary and conceptual art scene during the 1980s. His multi-disciplinary body of work, which includes paintings, sculptures, installations, and textile-based pieces, will be on display, showcasing the breadth and depth of his artistic vision. Sharif’s enduring influence on the Emirati art scene continues to inspire established and emerging talents across the Gulf.

In addition to Hassan Sharif’s work, the section also features contemporary Emirati artists, representing young and female practitioners in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth. This partnership highlights the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing and promoting Emirati arts globally.

Celebrating the Resilience of Arab Art

Dr. Ridha Moumni, the Tunisia-born deputy chairman of Christie’s Middle East and North Africa and the curator of the exhibition, emphasizes that the exhibition is not just a display of art but an educational project. The aim is to establish a bridge that connects diverse collections to the broader London public, providing exposure to Arab art that may not be familiar to many.

Through this exhibition, the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth and the Barjeel Art Foundation are proud to share their cultural heritage and artistic achievements with the world. As the deputy chairman, Dr. Ridha Moumni, states,

“It’s an honor and privilege. And to highlight the art of the region in our headquarters is symbolic.”

An Insightful Journey through Arab Creativity

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to marvel at the unique and diverse collection of artworks that span over 80 years of creative expression. The artists showcased in this event include renowned figures like Muazzez Rawda, Maysoun Jazairi, Joyce Mansour, Farah Al-Qasimi, Hassan Sharif, and Safia Farhat.

Each artist brings a distinctive perspective and voice to their work, reflecting their cultural background, political influences, and personal experiences. From the abstract sculptures of Muazzez Rawda to the politically charged works of Maysoun Jazairi and from the surrealist poetry of Joyce Mansour to the contemporary photography of Farah Al-Qasimi, the exhibition showcases the vast diversity of Arab art.
