The GNTB’s approach revolves around three core themes. The first, ‘Embrace German Nature,’ highlights the breathtaking natural landscapes and invites travellers to indulge in activity-filled holidays amidst Germany’s scenic wonders. The second theme, ‘Historic Modern Germany,’ celebrates the country’s rich cultural heritage, focusing on its 51 UNESCO World Heritage sites. This segment sheds light on the traditions and customs of rural regions, providing a glimpse into the authentic soul of Germany. Lastly, the ‘Feel Good – Sustainable Travel in Germany’ campaign emphasizes how visitors can enjoy an environmentally friendly holiday, showcasing Germany’s dedication to sustainable practices.
Yamina Sofo, Director at the German National Tourist GCC Office (GNTO GCC), an affiliate of the GNTB, expressed the organization’s vision, stating,
“We aim to make a meaningful contribution towards climate change mitigation, supporting Germany’s commitment to net zero, as well as driving increasing numbers of environmentally aware, inbound GCC tourists.”
The GNTB seeks to present Germany as a year-round destination that embodies sustainability, diversity, accessibility, inclusivity, resilience, and long-term viability.
The GCC region has emerged as Germany’s top-performing inbound source market in Asia and Australasia. In 2022, 404,707 GCC guests generated nearly 1.13 million overnight stays, reflecting an impressive increase of 117.6% compared to the same period in 2021. Sofo remarked, “These figures confirm that Germany continues to be a preferred tourism destination for GCC visitors. Unspoiled nature and careful resource use are becoming increasingly important to them. We also want to encourage longer stays to reduce the carbon footprint per travel day.”
Germany’s allure extends beyond its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The country boasts over 350 spa and health resorts, and the GNTB is diligently focusing on the sustainability-related aspects of health tourism. This includes preserving traditional treatment methods, promoting location-specific treatments and remedies as drivers of regional prosperity, and implementing sustainable energy management practices.
The rise of low-impact tourism, aimed at supporting climate goals and enhancing resilience, has also gained momentum in Germany. With more than one-third of the country’s land area designated as nature parks or national parks, 200,000 kilometres of walking trails, and 70,000 kilometres of long-distance cycling routes, Germany provides ample opportunities for eco-conscious travellers to immerse themselves in the pristine beauty of its landscapes. Additionally, a rekindled interest in traditional rural lifestyles has further solidified Germany’s image as a sustainable travel destination.
Germany’s rich cultural tapestry adds another layer of allure for travellers. With an impressive array of 51 World Heritage sites and over 6,000 museums, the country offers a treasure trove of captivating places of historical and cultural significance.
As sustainability takes centre stage in travel choices, Germany stands as a shining example of a destination that seamlessly integrates environmental consciousness, cultural heritage, and diverse experiences. The GNTB’s commitment to sustainable tourism ensures that future explorers can continue appreciating Germany’s wonders while preserving its natural and cultural legacy. So, pack your bags and embark on an unforgettable journey to Germany, where sustainable travel meets extraordinary experiences.
