Rebel Wilson’s Bold Directorial Debut Announced In Cannes: Breaking Boundaries with “The Deb”

Rebel Wilson, the talented actress known for her comedic prowess, is making headlines with her recent achievements both behind and in front of the camera with her directorial debut “The Deb”. 

Wilson is set to embark on a new chapter in her career as she steps into the director’s chair for her debut feature film, “The Deb”.  This exciting project, which she will also star in, marks a significant milestone for the actress. The film, set in a high school setting, explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, and empowerment. Wilson’s foray into directing showcases her creative vision and her desire to explore different aspects of storytelling. 

Produced by Amanda Ghost, Len Blavatnik, and Gregor Cameron via their company Unigram (Tetris) and sister company AI Film (I, Tonya, Hacksaw Ridge), “The Deb” will be a musical comedy set in rural Australia. The stage production was written by Hannah Reilly (Sheilas, Growing up Gracefully) and includes original songs from singer-songwriter Meg Washington (The Beach). 

“The Deb” promises to be a heartwarming and relatable coming-of-age story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Wilson’s unique blend of humor and emotional depth is expected to bring a refreshing twist to the genre, making a highly anticipated film that showcases her skills both in front of and behind the camera.

Production is set to begin in Australia in September.

The cast includes Tara Morice (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge, Dance Academy), Jay Laga’aia (Nim’s Island, Star Wars, The Lion King, Wicked), Shane Jacobson (Kenny, The Bourne Legacy, The Dressmaker, Hairspray). 

Wilson’s “The Deb” has all chances to become new Australian classics like Muriel’s Wedding, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and Baz Luhrmann’s early films.

Wilson’s directorial debut, “The Deb”, reflects her passion for storytelling and her desire to take on new challenges.
